Dell wrote us to say that due to popular demand (read: common sense), they are extending the deadline for customers who want to order systems with Windows XP Home. A Dell rep said customers can order select configurations of the Inspiron 530 or 530s desktops with Windows XP Home through June 26. This means if you’re in the market for a Dell, and don’t want to pay the surcharge for downgrading your bundle from Vista to XP, you have a few more days to do it!!
While some automakers are already promising to have plug-in hybrids on the roadby 2010, the US Department of Energy is now pouring some cash into a slightly less ambitious joint effort with Ford, General Motors, and General Electric, which would see plug-ins capable of driving 40 miles on a single charge roll out by 2014. Under the new effort, General Motors will be tasked with improving lithium-Ion battery packs and charging systems, and integrating them into its own research with a test fleet by 2011, while Ford will be aiming to speed up the mass-production of plug-in hybrids, as well as improve its batteries and build prototype vehicles. Rounding things out, General Electric will be partnering with Chrysler to develop a dual-battery system, which promises to let vehicles travel 40 miles on a charge. All of that is still subject to appropriations by Congress, however, and the aforementioned companies would obviously be pouring in a good chunk of change themselves, as a mere $30 million isn’t exactly quite enough to shake up the auto sector these days.
This is definitely a unique and creative way to sell some salads. The advertising folks over at McDonald’s came up with this billboard near Chicago that actually grows it’s message in lettuce and judging from this picture were quite successful. Fresh lettuce growing from a billboard probably can’t last long, but it’s still a cool idea and looks really appealing
“McDonald’s came to us with a specific assignment,” said Avery Gross, a writer and creative director who worked on the salads billboard. “It’s an ad that celebrates freshness.”
Leo Burnett’s creative team worked closely with a horticulturalist to create a billboard that could start with 1½-inch spouts and grow into lush leaves. The garden appears to be safe from being plucked apart by birds because there is no place for them to perch and peck.
MobileMe, Apple’s replacement for .Mac, was announced at WWDC and something struck me (and some others) as a little odd: its logo is remarkable similar to a notorious software disaster from nearly a decade ago, Windows ME. Would a company so famous for the creation of household brand names really release MobileMe, and make it look like this? Yes. Yes they would. -Gizmodo
Apple’s new 3G iPhone, soon to be available in 70 countries, will cost $199 or $299, depending on the amount of memory, and be available in black and white on July 11.
